TransLink has taken another step toward the construction an aerial gondola system to move people up Burnaby Mountain to Simon Fraser University.
The proposed gondola would connect the Production Way SkyTrain station on Lougheed Highway with the SFU campus, about 2.5 kilometres up the mountain.
The Lower Mainland transit authority issued an official request for proposals Monday, according to its website.
"The concept would use the technology that's currently employed in the Peak 2 Peak Gondola at Whistler," said TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie.
Peak 2 Peak is a 4.4-kilometre gondola system that connects the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.
The SFU Community Trust had a gondola feasibility study drawn up last year, which projected the line could move between 2,000 and 3,000 people per hour.
There are many potential benefits to the idea, said trust CEO Gordon Harris.
"[It would] reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Harris said. "It would provide quicker service and, certainly during the winter season, a more reliable service."
$70M projection

The project — with an estimated cost of $70 million — could be economical in the long run, said Hardie.
"We run an awful lot of buses up and down that hill. Those buses are subject to a lot of wear and tear because it's a very steep hill," he said. "If there is another way, a high-capacity way to move people up and down the mountain, it's worth looking at."
The feasibility study also points to potential problems. The gondolas might pass over several townhouse developments, raising questions about noise, privacy and property values.
Proposals for building the system are due by Oct. 12.

Found this great little discussion of how a babies brain functions as opposed to an adults... I'm always interested in how our brain works, and how that shapes our behavior, and ultimately our lifestyle (must be the psychologist in me)... what are your guys thoughts on this, is it accurate?

Adults focus on objects that will be most useful to them. But . . . children play with the objects that will teach them the most. In our study, 4-year-olds imagined new possibilities based on just a little data. Adults rely more on what they already know. Babies aren’t trying to learn one particular skill or set of facts; instead, they are drawn to anything new, unexpected or informative.

Part of the explanation for these differing approaches can be found in the brain. The young brain is remarkably plastic and flexible. Brains work because neurons are connected to one another, allowing them to communicate. Baby brains have many more neural connections than adult brains. But they are much less efficient. Over time, we prune away the connections we don’t use, and the remaining ones become faster and more automatic. Moreover, the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that controls the directed, planned, focused kind of intelligence, is exceptionally late to mature, and may not take its final shape until our early 20s.

In fact, our mature brain seems to be programmed by our childhood experiences — we plan based on what we’ve learned as children. Very young children imagine and explore a vast array of possibilities. As they grow older and absorb more evidence, certain possibilities become much more likely and more useful. They then make decisions based on this selective information and become increasingly reluctant to give those ideas up and try something new. Computer scientists talk about the difference between exploring and exploiting — a system will learn more if it explores many possibilities, but it will be more effective if it simply acts on the most likely one.

Babies explore; adults exploit.

Anyway, the meet-up will be this coming Saturday (Sept 11th), OR the following Saturday, (Sept 18th). We'll decide on a place that's transit accessible to have dinner, and possibly do something afterwards. I suggest a pub or some similar alcohol dispensing establishment. Anyway, if anybody is interested, leave a post here, or PM me.

I'll also be contacting some of the "veteran" users via PM/email/phone, so I'll update our guest list if they're coming.

Hope to see some new faces this time around.

Peter

I'm not sure I really like the name, but I really like the device. There weren't many surprises, since the rumored "iTablet" has gotten lots of speculation over the past few months but I am stoked that it's finally official. It's basically a full-blown version of the iPhone that does everything a laptop or netbook would do but in a very stylish and intuitive way.

Alongside all of the typical media features like Photos, HD Video, and Music, it also has a digital "bookshelf" allowing you to store and read books...and *ahem* textbooks. The addition of iBooks is significant, because no other electronic device has the ability to display full color, multimedia pages in a seamless format like the iPad. Remember that video clip that your professor showed in your last lecture? Imagine if it was embedded in your textbook page like a YouTube video. The possibilities are endless, and I think the iPad is on the right track to revolutionizing this industry. As the production and distribution costs of electronic textbooks approaches "zero," it should drastically bring textbook prices down while maintaining the same profit margins for the textbook companies. (fingers crossed)

Another great feature of the iPad that no one really expected is the addition of a whole new productivity suite called iWork. This is going to allow people to use their iPad for work as well as entertainment. This means you'll be able to create papers, spreadsheets, presentations right on there. Another nifty part of iWork is the paint program, which allows you to finger paint, sketch, and draw right on the screen using the best multi-touch technology in the industry (am i turning into a fanboy?).

In summary, if you like your iPhone you will probably love the iPad. It takes the iPhone OS platform as far as it could possibly go (other than video calling) and I'm really excited to get my hands on one in a few months. If anyone wants to watch the full keynote, check out the link below.

Resources:
Hardware specs and High Res pics: http://mac.appstorm.net/general/app-news/an-in-depth-look-at-the-apple-ipad/
Mashable's Summary: http://mashable.com/apple-tablet/
The full Apple keynote in HD: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1001q3f8hhr/event/index.html
