Well I already posted about how I dislike 'my generation' but on a related note.. does anyone else have a great disdain for social networking? I know, it's ironic. This is a forum after all. I like forums. I like posting on imdb. Between 2000-2004 I even liked IRC. But since then I have pretty much totally ignored msn messenger / chat / yahoo messenger / etc. I don't have a facebook. I don't have a myspace.
I don't just not have them but I actually hate them. I hate how people waste so much time on facebook and myspace sending each other little glittery pics that just say WASSUUP?!? It really annoys me when I go to a lecture and 90% of the class is on their laptops checking their facebooks. Then they complain that they didn't get As. Isn't it obvious?
There's just something about networking that seems wrong, so fake, and like McDonald's employees when they tell you to have "a nice day". It's all about people you don't really know, having thousands of acquaintances you rarely even see, and wasting time.
I don't think it's good.

"I will get rid of that "friend" if I were you. In SFU, friends don't let friends take Philosophy."
Funny, but is phil really so bad?
I was planning on taking some Phil in the future for electives, but now I'm worried. Is it really so hard at SFU? I once picked up a book on Philosophy from a condo book-sharing thing and it was all on Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, and so on. I thought it was really fascinating. So is philosophy really so bad at SFU? Is it just "boring" for people who don't like phil, or is it actually demanding, involving a lot of papers, graded unfairly, awful profs and so on?
I must say I am sick of assistant profs who have no experience. I had one this semester and it looks like I'm getting one next semester for Kin 207. Anyone heard of Bloomfield? Well, it seems like a new/assistant prof, and it sucks that they pass off profs with no experience on to students, because it always = worse grade.

Anyone seen Food Inc?
I just saw it. It wasn't exactly an eye-opener. I already knew about the abominations that are chicken farms and pig farms and cow farms, how cruelly the animals are treated, how the immigrant workers are exploited and feces gets into everything, and how there's a massive conspiracy going on with the corn industry trying to get corn into everything from dog food to cat food to your orange juice to cow feed to fish feed to chicken feed to medicine to soda. But still really interesting. Actually there was one thing I thought was fucking shocking. These really obese diabetic people came on and said that they had never even known fast food was unhealthy, and that they thought all food is healthy. Then they complained that they couldn't afford both diabetes medication and healthy food, it was either one or the other, so they were going to pay for the diabetes meds and stick to unhealthy food. Wtf. I think it's shocking people can fail to realize fast food is unhealthy, and even more shocking people automatically assume it's too expensive to eat healthy. Broccoli is really goddamn cheap. Lentils are really cheap. Beans are cheap. Eggs are cheap. Oranges are cheap. Healthy food is not too expensive, it's just that it's not as FILLING, and people are too goddamn greedy.

But it still got me thinking, as did Capitalism: A love Story (has anyone seen that? It's really good, you should see it).
Capitalism: A love story actually WAS an eye opener. Has anyone ever heard of Wal-Mart's "Dead Peasants" policy before?
WAL-MART BUYS LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES ON ITS EMPLOYEES WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION, AND THEN HOPES THEY DIE SO THAT THEY CAN CLAIM THE LIFE INSURANCE.
They actually figure these deaths into their annual finance reports, like, expecting than x number of employees will die this year and therefore there will be x amount of revenue from the life insurance they bought on those people.

That's fucking crazy! There's already a significant number of people who get murdered by their crazy ex-husbands, wives, friends and so on every year for life insurance money. If we let companies and corporations buy life insurance on people without those people knowing about it or consenting, it's ridiculously dangerous. It's just INSANE that someone can take out a life insurance policy on you and profit from your death without you being able to stop them.

I already knew I had Katherine Regan for PSYC 100 and I've heard her class is quite hard... but I decided to stick it out because I want to do PSYC 100 and 102 before CRIM 103.

I am taking CRIM 104 and 135 in Surrey. Outlines haven't been posted for either and the profs aren't on the SIS. So today when I was checking to see if the textbooks are in I discovered that 104 is being taught by Stoneman and 135 by Bowbrick.

Now, granted, a friend of mine loved Bowbrick... but I've heard absolutely terrible things about Stoneman... that she is improving, but her lectures are all over the place. So keeping my GPA above 3.5 for my scholarship is starting to worry me.

Guess I'll have to make up my marks in 135 and POL 241 DE. :\

PS. Sorry about turning the Academic Lounge into my personal area to bitch and complain. hahah

So I'm in a class and for the last assignment I had handed mine in on time, contemplating whether or not I should turn it in late, to improve my mark, in consideration that I would lose 10% for handing it in late.

In the end I decided against it, I was tired, and wasn't sure my last minute changes would make that more than a 10% difference.

So the TA ends up saying that for the last two assignments, he forgave people for handing in the assignment 8 hours late (the assignment was due at 4PM but he accepted them up until 12AM).

I'm pissed now because I handed mine in on time, and would have gladly took the extra 8 hours to make revisions.

What do you think I should do, or what is fair? I don't want to complain directly to him because I have one assignment still to be marked. I was thinking of complaining to the instructor, or go higher, what do you think?

How is it fair some people get an extra 8 hours to hand it in with no penalty?

Do people often minor in business admin? I personally haven't heard of anyone minoring, only majoring. In my case, if I switch to the minor none of my courses will be wasted, so that's pretty good.

Is a minor in Business admin any useful in finding a job (ie. bank) or is it a waste of time.
