My teaching career has spanned forty-five years and three different boards of education. The last thirty-five of those years have been spent at Mitchell District High School. During those years, I have seen many changes: from "blackboard" to "chalkboard" (is that the ultimate political correctness?), from the Encyclopedia Britannica to Wikipedia, from five high school grades to four, from eight subjects a day to four, from Dickensian novels and Shakespearean plays to the inanities of Sweet Valley High, from dittos to Gestetners to computers, from rigorous academic standards that recognized only four out of forty-nine graduating students as Ontario Scholars to a system that gives that honour to almost an entire class, from a time when every student studied at least one foreign language to a system that counts remedial English as a credit, from a time when students stood to answer or read to a time when they slouch lazily, from a time when school determined society’s standards to a time when school has become the victim of society’s lack of standards.
