Hi, i've noticed that illicit has been posting up some great recommendations for keeping your computer stylish and secure! I thought I'd recommend a useful site for some software as well!

software can be pricey sometimes especially when it comes to Office suites and multimedia applications.

here's a great website that will help you find an open source (meaning that the code can be developed and updated by programmers, or a collaboration of programmers freely) alternatives for expensive software or applications and they're free!
http://www.osalt.com

another site like http://www.sourceforge.org is a very nice directory of open source or shareware applications that you can download. you have to do a little of your own searching but it is all categorized and rated so that you can find the program that suits your need the most!

and i don't know how many of you like to use Photoshop, but I know the software is SO expensive to buy it's not even worth it if you're not creating graphics or designs commercially.
so here's a really good alternative...GIMP (The GNU Image Manipulation Program). I've been using this program for about a year now and it's easy to use if you have already had experience with Photoshop.
Another GIMP product is a film editing software for free! I do a bit of film production so i have Adobe Premier to do it, but Cinepaint (formerly known as Film GIMP) is a free film editor where you can upload your video (provided that you have the right video card and hardware) so you can make home movies look more professional :)
Another program (if you're looking for Vector imaging software, like Adobe Illustrator), http://www.inkscape.org is your best bet. You can find more information about these programs through their websites.

for office suites, Open Office is one of the best free office suite alternatives to Microsoft Office. I've used it before and i have to say it's quite good, with many of the same features as word, powerpoint, and excel and the suite is compliant with Microsoft documents so switching over is really not a big hassle. just go to their website and check it out.

anyway, i just thought illicit had a good thing goin' here, and i felt like contributing to some good finds for software :)

Aren't you tired of having a slow pc? Well today's your lucky day. Today i will be teaching you what programs you should use to take care of your computer and how manys times per week you should do it. Lets start off with with Ad-Aware SE Persnal Edtion.

Ad-Adaware SE Personal Edition

What is Ad-aware SE Personal Edition? One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition's excellent reputation is well justified. The sky-blue, skinnable interface features five buttons. The first two, Status and Scan, lead to the core function of the application. These buttons initiate a scan of your files for adware components. After scanning is complete, the program presents a summary of results, followed by a list from which you select exactly which components to remove. Right-clicking an individual entry gives some information about the piece of suspected adware, though we would like more details.

Ad-Aware SE can alert you to more malignant forms of malware by separating items into critical and negligible categories. The third button, Ad-Watch, is nonfunctional in the Standard version. The fourth button, Plug-ins, shows you which Ad-Aware plug-ins are installed. The fifth leads to the help files.Ad-Aware SE does an excellent job of quickly finding and removing most adware and spyware components, although you will have to restart and rescan for a seriously infected machine. We were pleased to see an auto-update feature included with the program, keeping Ad-Aware up-to-date with the latest adware components. Ad-Aware SE should be part of your arsenal for keeping your machine free of adware and spyware components.

Where can I download Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition?
You can download Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition at the following link; http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-2144_4-10399602.html?tag=tab_pub

Now lets move on to AVG Free

AVG Free

What is AVG Free? This antiviral program offers rock-solid protection for no financial commitment. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides all the necessities, including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections. By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG create a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests. This app's interface can't be described as beautiful, yet it is mostly simple to navigate. Sure, you can plunk down a lot of cash for an antiviral application with more features, but AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition delivers the goods for free.

Where can I download AVG Free? You can download AVG Free at the following link;http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10543927.html?tag=lst-0-2

Now enough said with AVG Free and lets talk about Crap Cleaner.

Crap Cleaner:

What is Crap Cleaner? CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a system-optimization tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system, allowing it to run faster and more efficiently, and giving you more hard-disk space. The application cleans traces left by Windows, Internet Explorer, and third-party applications. Version 1.28.227 updates Hotfix Uninstaller cleaning, adds secure certificate to the installer, and improves secure deletion performance.

Where can I download Crap Cleaner? You can download Crap Cleaner at the following link; http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10547048.html?tag=lst-0-1

Okay I'm sick of Crap Cleaner lets go to Spybot - Search & Destroy.

Spybot - Search & Destroy

What is Spybot - Search & Destroy? Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. Spybot also can clean program and Web-usage tracks from your system, which is especially useful if you share your computer. Modules chosen for removal can be sent directly to the included file shredder, ensuring complete elimination from your system. For advanced users, it allows you to fix Registry inconsistencies related to adware and to malicious program installations. The handy online-update feature ensures that Spybot always has the most current and complete listings of adware, dialers, and other uninvited system residents.

Version 1.4 has the first native multi-installation scanner, noticeably faster than the previous version during scans, and has improved the tools and updated the interface.

And where can I download this program? You can download this program at the following link; http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-6

Lets talk about how we can provent hackers now. Now with lots of poeple learning more about computers we see more and more hackers. Thank god that some companies have the worked to prevent problems.

Zone Alarm Free

What is Zone Alarm Free? It's a firewall. ZoneAlarm is designed to protect your DSL- or cable-connected PC from hackers. This program includes four interlocking security services: a firewall, an application control, an Internet lock, and Zones. The firewall controls the door to your computer and allows only traffic you understand and initiate. The application control allows you to decide which applications can and cannot use the Internet. The Internet lock blocks Internet traffic while your computer is unattended or while you're not using the Internet, and it can be activated automatically with your computer's screensaver or after a set period of inactivity. Zones monitor all activity on your computer and alert you when a new application attempts to access the Internet. Version 6.5.722 removes McAfee installation gate and fixes an update problem with LastWriteTime.

Note:ZoneAlarm is free for individual and not-for-profit charitable entity use (excluding governmental entities and educational institutions).

Where can I download this firewall? You can download this firewall at the following link; http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10550364.html?tag=lst-0-7

You should use these programs AT LEAST once a month if not more. This has been a fast tutorial created by me. If you want more information about anything posted here or other problems I will be glad and try and help

So, my crim 135 professor is a former BC Attorney General. And on Monday in class we were discussing different bills that have gone through parliament, are going to through, etc. regarding criminal law/law, and the subject of the Liberal bill for de-criminalizing marijuana in amounts of 15 grams came up.

So, he then said that he would like it to be de-criminalized, in amounts of 15 grams (which is an ounce for those of you who don't know, which is quite a bit), he says that he doesn't use it himself but he has no problem if other people use it. He even went further and said that he thinks the selling and distribution of it should be de-criminalized.

Its not the fact that its marijuana, but I still think its super cool that a professor would say this in a lecture hall full of students, not to mention he was the BC Attorney General, cool guy!!
