3 Credit vs 4 Credit vs Intercession

edited June 2008 in General
What is everyones experiences?

I have a load of 4 creds this semester and two of them have insane readings per week, I've finished one text by week three already.

After this one class the one three cred class I have is wonderful, I'm surprised when I hadnt opened my book in three weeks an was able to finish the readings in 3 hours, as opposed to the amount of time each week it would take me to finish one weeks readings for a 4 cred

I did take two ENG intercession classes before, and I remember we had to have a 250 page novel done in a week

The only 4-credit course I've taken was SA 150 and the readings were pretty reasonable. I also had to take FAN x99, which is another 4-credit course but apparently doesn't count towards your degree. It was easy, obviously. But the majority of my classes are 3-credit and the only problematic ones being Philosophy, PoliSci, and Archaeology. Gross.

I'm taking the PSYC 100 Intercession right now and it's alright. I actually really like it. I can't imagine doing this during a regular 13-week semester. Plus, the daily quizzes and midterms every 2 weeks kind of force me to finish all the readings on time. The readings itself are like 50 pages/chapter, which is a little more than I woud like.

every PSYC class i have taken have been jam packed chapters, every soc class ive ever taken have so many readings and only about 5 pages of useful information

    Intersession?

I find the workloads the same for 3 credit and 4 credit, lol.

right now i have two 3 credit courses that are individually harder and more time-consuming than my 4 credit course...

    3 credits - 3 hours of classroom a week.

    4 hours - 4 hours of classroom a week.

Intersession, the class is done twice as fast, but finishes in half the time.

Just because you dont do your readings doesnt mean they have the same amount of readings!

That about sums it up, except that the class is done twice as fast therefore it finishes in half the time.

Personally I've had a 4 credit class that had no course readings, but that definitely did not mean it was easy. Whereas this semester I'm in a 3 credit course with moderate amount of reading but an assignment every week with ridiculously hard markers. Both psychology.
Can you guess what they are? Also can you guess what I'm suppose to be doing right now? Do you want to? Do I want to? Why am I up so early. I want to go back to sleep...

the only 4 credit class i've had was econ 103, and that was a really easy course.

I'm aware of the technical layout of 3 credits = 3 hours and 4 credits = 4 hours, but most profs don't really care about that I've found

In my stats class our teacher told us we should be studying 1-2 hours a day, for a 3 credit class, we thought he was joking and started laughing too

pretty sure cmpt275 was only 3 hours/week but was 4 credits... 'cept we had to meet w/ our teacher/TA a few times. but the amount of work for that class was just ridiculous! had to write 20+ page booklets every 2 weeks.

but this is good if not all other courses are like that... i need 2 4-cred courses so that i have to take 1 less course to graduate... anyone know of some 100 or maybe 200 level 4-cred classes? i've just about finished all my graduation reqs and now i need 23 credits from anywhere...so i'm gonna load up on first year crap :D

Yeah, every CS student has had to go through CMPT 275, but yes, if a class is more work then it would be more credits.

But if you want an easy 4 credit class, GERM-102 which is Intro to German (aka German für das N00bs) and is really easy.

Studying 1-2 hours a night for a class would be nice, sounds like an easy class.

well in the arts unlike the applied sciences and the natural sciences studying on a daily basis is never something i have done ;)

which also sets us up for big time fail when we dabble in the sciences as it throws us off

Haha, you all were probably like, "stud-dee-ing??" :P

Good luck. Though, for English novels it's not the page number that counts but the writing on the pages. There are books so boring that you'll want to throw it into the fireplace after the first page, and then there are those which you'll never want to let go after you've read the very last page.

I remember I read 1984 in just a day. But, Catch-22 took a few months. :embarassed:

goddamnit, i got gypped. when i took those they were only 3 credits each.

had i had those extra credits, i'd be finished my elective requirements. mofos!

I've only taken two 4 credit courses, Econ 103 and 105.

I failed both my midterm and final, and I still got a C in 103.

In 105, I signed up for the course, and that's about all I did, and I passed with a D.

    is econ really that hard

im so intrigued by macro and micro economics i want to take them just to see if ill do as bad as everyone else says
  • edited June 2008
I heard it, and saw the end of one lecture, and it can be basically summarized as a combination of boring facts plus some easy math, like find the average of a slope.

haha no it's not hard by any means. can't say much about 300- 400-level econ courses though. i hear those are tough.

i remember taking econ 103 through distance ed, which basically meant i did jackshit but i still did fine.
i suggest not to take them if your major doesn't require it...econ is a snorefest in general. and to think i was going to minor in it! barf! no offense to imelting, the only econ guy i know of on talksfu lol.

whaaaatt?? who studies 1-2 hours/night/class??? are you insane? i study a few hours before midterms and finals, but that's it. (and i still have a 3.15 CGPA..which isn't great, but given my effort level isn't bad either! (and I haven't been taking easy courses either))

i think people in the math and natural sciences have to ralph, unless you are in those and you dont

when ive taken classes in those departments ive down awful if i didnt constantly study compared to my other classes where i just cram 1-3 days before

i'm in comp sci. the course i'm taking now requires knowledge of calc1, calc2, stat270, numerical analysis, linear algebra + matrix calculus which i never actually learned. (all that just to answer a single question too)

I'm taking a 4 credit language course. (intro). It moves at a pace that I can barely catch up with. Let's just say that intersession classes are INTENSE! Yeah, it's true! I did have to study 1-2 hours a day for that intersession course! (which ended this past Thursday).

But did anyone else who had intersession classes enjoy the atmosphere of being in a classroom again (sort of like highschool) for two hours everyday and getting to really know your classmates, and hanging out with them??

I need some elective credits, thinking about taking SA 100 or SA 101 since they're both 4 credits each...anybody here taken them? What did you think?
  • edited June 2008
If my memory serves me well those are heavily based on theory, if thats something you do well at by all means.

I personally got A's in both intro psych courses, while others did bad.
