Repeated courses--NEED HELP NOW!

edited January 2013 in General
Ok. I sent my student loan application around early December and it is approved. Today at 3pm, I received an email from SFU that they cannot confirm my enrollment for Spring 2013 term because I'm repeating courses. "In accordance with StudentAid BC policy, if you are repeating a course solely to improve the grade, you cannot include this course as part of your minimum full-time course load requirement to receive your BC student loan funding."

I'm a second year business student and I enrolled into 3 courses: bus 237, econ 103, and econ 105. I received a D in both econ courses last year (so so sad...don't laugh at me. I was a slacker). I need to take at least 9 credit courses, in additional to the course(s) I'm repeating, in order to receive my funding.

I'm repeating the two courses because they're required courses, and I need at least a C- for both courses in order to enroll in Bus 207 which is also a required course for business students.

I'm really frustrated because SFU decides to send me an email today (even though studentaid approved my application) when the financial advisors aren't available and school is starting next week, and they can't consider the fact that the courses I'm repeating are required courses for business students. Now I have to send an appeal form, along with a letter explaining why I need to repeat the courses, another letter from SFU verifying that I need to take the courses for the program, and a copy of my transcripts. Furthermore, my mom is expecting to have everything sent by tomorrow.

I want to know if anyone has ever experienced this. I want to know what I can do in order to get my funds right away before the tuition deadline.

Please and thank you!

  • Try doing a few electives.
  • but two econ courses in one term is hard enough (for me). i didn't repeat any of my econ courses in the summer or fall term. i took a summer break, and i had to finish my other required courses and retake another course in the fall term.
  • I don't think you'll even survive in the business faculty. You should be thinking about switching majors or dropping out cause it doesn't sound like you take school seriously.
  • I suggest you change major's or starting working very very hard.

ECON 103 and 105 are one of the easiest courses offered by the Business faculty. If you didn't do good in them, wait till you get to the harder courses: you'll be screwed.

You should be able to do 5 courses easy next semester if you have already done ECON 103 and 105. Do IAT 100 and EDUC 100. Those are also easy courses.

You really have to put in a lot of effort to succeed in university.

    Hope this helps!

  • Take electives to improve your GPA first. This is crucial. Consider re-taking your econ courses in the summer instead, after sorting everything out with StudentAid in a timely manner.
  • Hahaha I would seriously recommend you switch major, a D is still counted as a pass because it's >50% so you repeating the course would count as improving grades; it doesn't matter if you're required to get the C- to student loan BC. Remember business isn't for everyone, it's already competitive enough as it is in SFU, no need to kill yourself doing something you're not good at.
  • This happened to me last semester. Though I wanted to remain in the interest-free status rather than receive funding.

What you should do is go talk to a financial advisor, they will help you and tell you exactly what you need to do.

You will need to write a letter to StudentAid BC. It's nothing fancy just say that you need to retake the courses to improve your grades, that they are mandatory courses, and that you cannot go further in your studies without obtaining the minimum grades in those courses.

Then just go to your department's/faculty's academic advisor and ask them to write a letter to StudentAid BC confirming the fact that you need to repeat those courses and improve your grades in them.

You'll also need to provide StudentAid BC with your academic transcript and a list of required courses for your program.

Once you have all those things, you can go back to the financial aid office and they will send the letters and the transcript to StudentAid BC. Once StudentAid BC knows that you need to repeat them to move on in your studies, they will give you the money.

Unfortunately, it will take several weeks for them to process and your appeal will probably not be approved before the tuition deadline.
  • LOL are u kidding me? already failing first year courses, why are you even in school? and what are you gonna do with a business degree? degrees mean nothing these days. do as others suggested and drop out, clearly school is not for you
  • Uh some people just don't have a good transition from high school to university, there's nothing wrong with that. You just have to fix your studying habits and time management. It doesn't mean you're stupid, maybe rethink your major?
  • ^ I agree, I just barely managed a 2.0 average my first semester taking 4 arts courses. High school to university was a hard transition for me. My second semester I managed a 3.5 average taking 5 courses. Some people struggle their first year, some transition easily. Just depends on the person
  • "When a course is repeated and the unit value has decreased, the student
must, in consultation with the department, make up the missing unit
component before being credited with the full original units."

Has anyone had any experience with this? and how much is the unit value decreased?
  • Are you actually in a situation where that occurs? That seems like it would be a very rare if not non existent situation, but I guess it happens, im just curious as to what course?
  • Actually, I just saw this on the sfu site and was curious.
  • I like how this thread started as a question asking for help and suggestions to a complete ridicule of kumiko and telling her gtfo SFU lol.

I wasn't going to say it because I wanted you to find out on your own but you seem kind of worried so just so you know if you pass the deadline don't worry to much because it is only 2% so average like $50-100 in late fees. StudentAidBC lost my contract for my first semester so I received funds really late but I ended up not getting any late penalties anyway. It could be because I spoke to a financial advisor though.
  • Lol... I didn't even read the 12 new comments since I haven't been on this site for so long.

And no worries, I passed all my courses last semester, got out of academic probation and now in good standing, StudentAid accepted my appeal within two weeks even though I was informed it would take 4-6 weeks, got enrolled to all the courses I wanted to get into, received my student loan, and no penalty fee. What can I say? I'm a lucky girl.

So thank you for those who were so kind to help <3, and the others can just go fuck themselves.
