Communications vs. SIAT

edited April 2013 in General
Hey everyonee!
I got into both the Communications and SIAT programs for sfu, but I can't decide which one to go into. I feel like Communications would suit me more as I have no experience with computer programs or designing, but despite that I'm really interested in SIAT as well. What are the pros and cons for both programs? Would majoring in Communications and minoring in SIAT be a good option and would SIAT be difficult for someone without any prior experience??
Any help would be much appreciated!!

  • A shallow question: SIAT's at the Surrey campus, so how convenient is it?

  • Its much more convenient for me as I live right by the skytrain, but the program itself is more important to me than convenience
  • Well the two programs are so different, I think the best person to decide which is a better fit for you is you. That said though here are some things to consider:

-Not having prior experience with software like photoshop (and the rest of the creative suite) shouldn't really matter as long as you are willing to learn. IAT 100 touches on this, and there are resources all over the web to help.

-Most kids in siat have some aptitude for design. Its why most chose the program. So if you have no experience designing siat might not be for you. That said if these are things you are interested in i'm sure you could learn them. In general though most people who are interested in design have done some kind of design work before they get to university.

    - It would be easy for a siat student to take some communications courses. It is much harder for a communications student to take siat courses. The majority of iat courses are reserved for siat students until open enrollment, and by then many of them are full.

-Whatever you do you can take a year trying out different things until you know what you like without extending how long it will take you to graduate. If you pick courses wisely you can take both communication and iat courses, then whichever major you pursue you can use the other programs courses as breadths.
  • Here's what I suggest

Enroll in either SIAT or Communications program

Do introductory level courses in both programs, IAT 100 for SIAT, not sure about communication.

Then decide what you want to do.
  • I agree with hehehe, take courses from both programs and see which one you like better and after all you can always change your program of study before you declare a major.
