RTW?!

edited April 2013 in General
I am so lost at the moment and I don't know what should I do~ After being placed on academic probation last semester I tried really hard on this semester and I got a somewhat OK grade on midterm with most of them above average 10%. However I still screwed my final with over-pressuring myself really hard and I ended up getting a terrible 1.8x CGPA. Today I got an email from SFU saying that I am required to withdraw. What should I do :(

P.S sorry for bad English :(

  • I'm sorry I did read those posts but I am not sure if it was the exact same thing because they are planning on transferring to other places and I want to get more opinion out of it :(
  • thanks for the link, I read it all, but I still have some confusion regarding this. I am international student and it seems like my only option for now is to get into the "back on the track". I have read plenty of sources from sfu website and I think I should talk to the adviser before making any further decision.
So, according to posts above I won't be able to get the upass and only taking the bot100 for the summer semester?
  • You won't get a upass if you aren't a fulltime student. I think you need at least 6 credit hours (2 courses) in a semester to get a upass. So how did you get such a low gpa in the first place? Maybe we can address some of your study problems.
  • wel...I transferred from FIC 2 semesters ago, and I did OK in FIC. However, I think I am still not used to the sfu study environment in general. As I mentioned above, I got 10% above average on the midterm on 3 out of 4 courses that I was taking and the one left over was just on average. In my opinion there are not tough courses but somehow I just got really low on the final, for example I took the REM 100, which is a rather less difficult course, I scored 87% on the midterm but getting C- on the final grade. I did try hard, but the grades were just horrible :(

look into a retroactive withdrawal.. if you have a valid reason you can drop 1 or more classes and bring your gpa above 2.0 and then the rtw will be removed. its a long shot but i thought id throw it out there, because my friend did that once and it worked for him
  • how can I do that, could you provide a bit more information about it? thanks...
according to what I saw from google, it only says that "only be done for unusual circumstances beyond a student’s control which makes it impossible to complete a course(s)" but I have actually completed my courses already :(
  • Hey if you don't want to transfer back from college I think you should try the Back on Track program. A lot of RTW students feel lost and don't know what to do anymore or where to start making changes. For me I just thought it'd be a good opportunity to extend my probation, but in the end I found this program to be helpful.

I got a 4.1 term GPA with the guidance of BOT 120, which is in the first term that they allow you to take regular courses. Before BOT my high score term GPA was a 2.3...and CGPA was bad enough to be in AP and then RTW. So I was very pleased with seeing A+ and A's on my transcript! Now I should be out of probation after summer term.

Look, it's not a magical course on the 'secrets' of success or whatever. But it does a fine job of addressing all the issues that struggling students might have that hinder their success. Topics such as motivation, procrastination, time management, managing emotions and stress, interdependence, wise choices, choosing your beliefs/thoughts/behaviors/attitudes. Other things include smart test taking, efficient learning strategies, learning styles, dealing with prof/TA teaching styles and much more.

The program has like a 75% success rate according to my instructor. Take responsibility for your own success and be serious about making changes to your study habits, and you should find yourself in the 75% that get back on track, and not the 25% that end up RTW again.

~P.S. - You can get a U pass as long as you enroll in at least one course. However BOT 110 (first term of the program) won't allow you to take any regular classes, and BOT 110 itself isn't worth any credits. You only go to sessions like once a week though, so 4 days a month o.O. If you really want a U pass though, use other methods if you know what I mean ^^
  • I am really appreciate that you share your own experience with us. It gives me lots of motivation. I am going to the appointment in a few days and hopefully it goes well~

  • I have a question about being RTW. If I were to transfer to another college, say Langara, and then instead of transferring back to SFU, I want to transfer to UBC, would the RTW still stand on my records? Or would I be given a clean slate at UBC?
