Anybody taken IAT 102 or HUM 102W?

edited May 2013 in General
Looking for an elective for this summer and I'm currently enrolled in both, taking IAT 102 with Andrew Hawryshkewich and HUM 102W (in person, not DE)  with Brook Pearson. Apparently neither of them usually teach either courses and are known to make an otherwise easy class painful.

Could use any information regarding the course load and profs.

Thanks

  • Well I took 102w, albeit a while ago with a different prof.

Some common criticisms from people in my class when I took it were that there was too much reading, the papers were too short (weird, I know), and that the tests were a little too hard.

    - There are a lot of readings. Most of them are interesting though which makes them easier to get through. Looking at his outline from fall the books are all ones that were used in the class I took, so the material is consistent with what has been offered over the last 4 years. Personally I didn't even do many of the readings, opting to simply read summaries of everything on book rags instead. I ended up with a B+, so it is possible to get by without reading everything as long as you are familiar with the characters and plots.

    - For my class there were 4 papers, each 500 words, worth 15% each. I see he has essays mentioned on his outline but I don't know how long his are. Generally the essays were pretty easy, with marking being hit and miss depending on your TA.

-The hardest part for most people were the tests. I see his class has been a take home final in the past, so I guess this doesn't really apply in his offering of the course. In other offerings though tests usually have a quote recognition component that many have trouble with. The other multiple choice parts and written were okay though.

In general I enjoyed the course. If you are interested in greek/roman mythology I would recommend it. If you aren't though I would steer clear in favor of a different W/B-Soc.

I used http://www.humanities.sfu.ca/documents/doc/HUM_102_D900_1127 as a guide for what his course is like.

  • I don't suggest that you take IAT 102 with Andrew. I've heard that the class is much better and easier with a different prof. He's incredibly picky with his critiques, which is fine if the class actually understood what he wanted for the projects.
