Graphing Calculators for Math Courses?

Hi TalkSFU community,

I'm going to be joining you guys this fall. Just wondering if graphing calculators are needed (or even just helpful) in SFU math courses (going into Computer Science and will be taking Calculus). The thing is, if they are necessary, I might as well invest in one now rather than later since I could use one right now too. But if they aren't needed, there'd be no point in spending $100 for something I won't use very often.

Thanks in advance~

  • You will not be allowed to use any calculator for calc 1, 2, and 3. (151, 152, 251).  Also, as a comp sci major, you will be taking stat 270 and math 240.  You are allowed graphing calculators for stat 270, but they will not be any help because there is no "graphing" involved, so it's better to use a nice scientific one instead (imo).  You are not allowed any calculator for 240 either.
  • Ah, okay. No graphing calculator then. Thank you (:
  • I'm in computing science and I've never used a graphing calculator for any of my courses
  • cmpt major, math minor here. No graphing calculators won't be of any use. You may have it if you like for personal use but you can use alot of free resources for graph representations. At most you would only need a scientific calculator but no more. Almost all math courses will not let you have a calculator during an exam so don't waste your money on a graphing calculator.
