CMPT 354 - Oliver Schulte/ John Edgar?

edited July 2013 in General
Hi. I am taking CMPT 354 in Fall 2013.
Who do you recommend taking that course under? Schulte or Edgar?

  • I had it with Schulte, and i can say he's a pretty nice guy and easy to approach. Thing is, he is not so good at teaching. Assignments were pretty challenging and the final exam was... well lets just say the class as a whole didn't do so great. If you take it with Schulte, you'll have to learn most of the material on your own.
  • I've already had 2 courses with John he's great. Fair assignments and fair tests and he explains things well. I'm taking the course just cuz he's teaching haha.
  • This is the reality, 90% of profs here do not know how to teach as they have never learned pedagogy, they know their subjects very well but have no clue how to teach. This is a problem all universities face and something should be done, but I think never will.  I work here and what I see is absolutely awful.
  • John is a great lecturer, there are many good profs here who enjoy teaching. But this isn't elementary school or high school. 3 months is not a long period of time. Profs have barely any time to go through their required material, so they have no choice but to rush through it. Students really do need to spend lots of time learning on their own, that's just the way it is. There simply isn't enough time to go over the material more than once. I will agree though that there are profs who shouldn't be here and are just downright awful.
  • i haven't had schulte, but john edgar is probably one of my favourites, although i've only had him for a course or 2.
