Graduation delayed by enrollment system?

edited July 2013 in General
I'm a publishing minor starting my 4th year, and I have yet to take a publishing course due to the scarcity of courses and spaces in this department. Every semester it's the same thing: I check everything, and it seems that I should be able to enroll, I try, get rejected, contact advisors for help, and am told there is some kind of catch that will not allow me to enroll, and I'll have to try again next semester.

The last time I tried, I was told I was unable to enroll because I was currently taking my 60th unit, so it was not technically completed, and therefore I technically did not meet the prereqs. I don't know about all departments, but I have never had any issues like that with my major or elective classes that required prereqs. It seemed strange but I accepted it.

I tried to enroll in that same course today, now at over 80 units, and was told yet again that I could not enroll. I meet all the prereqs, there was several spaces left in the course, I'm a declared publishing minor, and I was not allowed to enroll. There is no conceivable reason why this should be.

The weirdest part was, I was able to enroll in one publishing course (YAY!) and it is the same course level, and has the same restrictions and prereqs as the first one I tried. So why could I only get into one and not the other? It makes no sense.

We all know the SFU system sucks, we've all had issues with it. But this is beyond that. It's almost impossible for me to get into REQUIRED courses for my DECLARED MINOR. Until now, I've sucked it up, but clearly something is seriously flawed in the enrollment system here, especially in the publishing programme.

I've contacted my advisor again, but after this whole experience, I doubt anything will come of it except for a "try again next time." I'm starting my 4th year. I NEED to get these courses or I won't be able to graduate on time.

I'm not even asking for advice or anything. If the advisors haven't helped, and likely won't help, there's nothing any of you fine people can do. I'm really just venting, and maybe try to draw some attention to this issue. My career (and life) are potentially being put on hold.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I don't mean just not getting into a course you wanted, but having your graduation delayed purely because of the terrible enrollment system at SFU.

  • Hmm sounds like awful advisors. I couldn't register once due to a system error, and the advisor enrolled me in the course no problem.
  • I'm reluctant to blame the advisors. They've always seemed to do their best for me, and I know a lot of people have similar issues with publishing courses, so it must be a really hard job. I think the bigger issue is a broken enrollment system, and no one seems to be acknowledging it.

For example, if we want to take the prereq for a course a semester before that course, we should be able to, no matter what department we're in. It's pretty ridiculous for us to be expected to wait a whole semester in between for no good reason.
  • Good news! The advisor was able to help me out this time! I finally get to take some publishing courses after three long years...
  • Not only should you blame the registration system, but you should blame the school as a whole for not offering the courses required to complete majors/minors....and the government for slashing money to post secondary education.  We all know who's responsible there...
  • I totally agree. The four year degree is becoming a thing of the past. I've often heard the rumor that an undergrad at SFU takes an average of 6 years or something like that. I doubt that's true, but the fact that it's even slightly believable is a bad sign. I do however, know many people (not just at SFU) that have needed to take 5+ years for various reasons, not just limited course offerings.

  • Ha im taking 6 years to grad, but that's half my fault, half having to deal with scheduling conflicts. 2 core courses for my major next semester have a course conflict... Wtf sfu??
  • I'm sick of sfu enrollment system. SFU calls themselves "tri-semester" yet the summer semester is a joke. First, barely any of the courses I needed towards were even offered this term, and the ones that were offered all conflicted in some way. There were 3 courses I could take and they were all different campuses for the same days -_- needless to say, i ended up taking electives... And, yeah we were told in first term at SFU (at orientation or something) that the average graduation rate is 5.7 years
  • DAYUM. Now I feel really lucky to be finishing in four years! (Assuming something like this doesn't happen next term too).
