MACM 316 and CMPT 307

edited July 2013 in General
So, many people have told me that these two courses will most likely be the hardest courses  computing science major will face (unless you plan to also major/minor in math). I keener-ed out of control today and began looking into Spring 2014 classes and noticed the two profs teaching these courses have very good ratings. (Kabanets for 307 and Ruuth for 316).

So my questions to all who have taken these courses before:

Is this suicide taking both in one semester? (should I bother with another course if I do?)
Are these passable with shitty profs? (If so I might be able to take one later on)

  • In my opinion, MACM 316 isn't that hard. It's heavy on calculations but if you're good with memorization and cranking out formulas 316 is easy to fair. Also, 316 usually has an alternate grading scheme where the final is worth 90%, which is always a good back up to have.

As for CMPT 307, the material is hard to comprehend no matter who you take it with. I took it with Kabanets. Even though he's one of the best profs in the department the average was still low. I also know a handful of people who have re-taken 307 a second time. It's just one of those courses that are genuinely hard for most.

You could definitely take both courses in the same semester but it also depends on the other courses you're taking. Hope that helps.
  • Thanks for the comment dwill.

My logic is this: better to get it out of the way asap so they don't affect my other classes in future semesters. Also figure a better prof will help me understand the concepts better and even through the material itself is difficult it would be better than struggling with a prof who is of no help at all.

If I were to go through with this I might just do one more course in that semester (thinking cmpt 320 or some wqb) or even just do those two exclusively.
  • A little late, but I'll be in your class (307)! I don't know about suicide; I certainly hope not. I'm taking it with Math 240, Math 251, and Stats 285. Granted I haven't taken it yet, but you'd be surprised how much you could handle--I'm sure you'll do fine!
  • Don't suicide plz
