stupid or no?

edited September 2013 in General
I'm thinking about doing an English major but I don't want to take English 199 - Intro to Uni Writing... would this be a stupid idea?

  • Why don't you want to take it? If your going to do an english major why not?
  • Are you asking because you think it would be too easy? Or because you think it will be hard/boring?

If the former then it is really up to you. From what I have heard it is apparently a very useful course. There are often stories about kids who do well in high school English then get crappy grades in writing courses when they get to SFU. In general the consensus on 199 seems to be that it is a very good overview of what you need to know in order to succeed in future writing courses.

If the latter then I think you could argue that if you don't like writing enough to be willing to take ENGL 199, you might not enjoy all of the subsequent writing you will do as an English major.

Looking at the requirements it doesn't say you have to take ENGL 199, so you could just not take it. Or you could take other writing courses then depending on how those go decide whether you want to go back and take it.
  • depending on the prof, 199 will be one of the MOST useful classes you'll ever take...it was for me at least. It truly teaches you how writing a decent paper is a process. It is a challenging course, but very worth it for all subsequent courses, not just english. I say do it
  • Depends if you are blonde or not.
