I got a new laptop which came with windows 8. I dont really like it as it is optimized for touch screen ones, so I wanna downgrade it to windows 7. If I buy windows 7 from futureshop it costs me over $100! as students can we get a cheaper version? from book store or somewhere?

  • Well if you are currently enrolled in a CMPT course you can take advantage of the CMPT msdnaa subscription,

If you aren't you can try microsofts dreamspark program that targets students. Previously though I think canadian students had a hard time taking advantage of it though since we generally do not have .edu email addresses. Might be better now though. https://www.dreamspark.com/Student/Default.aspx

On the topic of windows 8 it might be worth updating to 8.1 before downgrading. In general it has a lot of improvements, and I think the typical user would get used to it without going back to windows 7. If you avoid modern apps there are very few differences between windows 7 and 8.1

  • yeah. 8.1 does the trick.

skip the apps and you basically have the same interface as windows 7 but with a fancy customizable full-screen start menu.

and a bunch of other less noticeable changes.
  • @ryan yes i am a cs student and went to that link which is now redirected to dreamspark. I created an account there at dreamspark and validated my email but all I got was visual studio 2013 , sql server and bunch of others but no OS ( no windows 7)!

@EricJ how can I skip the apps, you mean using something like Skip Metro Suite?
  • Hm, well I'm not a cs student anymore so I cannot check. When it used to be elms instead of dreamspark you could get all sorts of versions of windows. I just assumed that was still the case.
  • You should be able to get the software. Take a look at this link: https://services.cs.sfu.ca/msdnaa/
  • @csguy Thank you for your help, the link worked for me :)
  • I thought all the CS 1337s all despise Microsoft and Apple, shouldn't you guys be running Linux?
