Easy courses

edited February 2014 in General
I need a GPA boost. I'm thinking of BISC 100. Is it an easy course? any recommendations on elective courses in the humanities or social sciences? Also, what is CHEM 215 like?

  • I don't know why everyone says STAT 100 is easy. I took it and while I didn't find it hard, the class average on exams were all in the low to mid 60's (and not curved)
  • That's because it's marked by TA's who are dumbasses (just like the calculus 150/151/152). Everytime I re-quested a remark in calculus I got marks back (once up to 20% more).
  • We're not allowed to ask for re-marks. My prof gives everyone an extra 2% at the end of the semester to account for "deviations" in marking between TA's but if we fight for marks we lose that 2%
  • You are allowed to ask for remark but yes you are losing the 2%.

But I still want to know why it was marked as wrong. I can decide afterwards if it's worth it or not (and if I genuinely made a mistake)
  • You can, but what he said was if you ask for a re-mark, they will mark the entire exam again. Meaning they will take away marks on sections that were marked "easy" so I really dont think its worth it. The marking is so arbitrary though when I look at my friends exams/assignments and we get different marks (not like 1 or 2 marks different, like entire letter grades) with the exact same answers
  • Ye. Honestly I kinda forgot how Calc 1 and 2 was with 300 students and a bunch of TA's that are all over the place in terms of marking consistency. I should've stuck with a class that is like many of my regular classes I need for my major, just 30-50 people on average. That way there is only 1 TA and the prof, and he is much more willing to explain what you did wrong since he doesn't have 200 other students bothering him through the week.

The course itself is easy, but I guess I overseen the marking problem that comes with a 100 level course and several TA's that are all over the place and a prof that unfortunately has no time to look into small things because how bombarded he is by the other hundred students in the class
  • I know what you mean. I found the material to be extremely easy, and the exam to be more than fair, but was shocked to see my exam mark. When I compared it to my friend's in the STAT lab he beat me by a full letter grade but we had the same answers, just worded differently
  • Yea, that's stupid and I would definitely be pissed in your place. I guess I'm just the type of competitive person who likes to get as high as possible, even tho at the end of the day, grades in university mean nothing, and nobody will care.

And I changed my mind. This course is frustratingly easy. Prof is spending 40 mins discussing Z scores :)
