The future of the internet

edited November 2007 in General
What do you think the future holds for the internet? There are a lot of "networks" right now, but I think those networks are only going to keep getting bigger and bigger. It wouldn't surprise me if we have computers that are specialized for certain tasks. For example, the online shopping community has fears about security, so if an online shopping company developed computers specially for that purpose and sold them, it would not only increase security but thereby increase profits and control of the industry (ie. Ebay's logical move one day). So this computer system would then consist of it's own seperate network...an evolution of the original website and cluster of servers. Google will probably have one too...their going after wireless spectrum already.

I'm not really savvy in the innovations of the Internet. I'll leave that for those Computer Science/Engineer people ;)

I read something about Net Netrality in an article recently, which is a major issue these days concerning the future of the internet. Network neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet (from Google).
I've always seen the Internet as a separate virtual universe. real-life society has rules, laws and judicial systems to induce moral codes in the real world, whereas the Internet is generally an ungoverned virtual society. The immense size of the internet makes it almost impossible to govern as well. If the Internet is somehow governable, should it even be? Should the Internet be left to be a "free society"?
Also if it we can't control what content we choose to read or what applications to use, and instead we have a higher governing body telling us what we can read and use, well that just sounds like censorship to me. I think taking away the internet's neutrality would be going backwards--we already have mainstream media having a lot of control over our content.
I remember a few years ago Telus Union members went on strike and they had a website for people to go on so they can learn more about the issues and so Telus took it down...this caused an uproar because it's a violation of freedom of speech. If this kind of thing happened on a larger scale, I just don't let people would let it happen...

anyway what you ya'll think. i wish i knew more about net neutrality, I would be reading up on it if it weren't for these damn midterms :((
