Summer Semesters

edited April 2008 in General
I don't get the hate for the summer semester. SFU is absolutely gorgeous during the summer, if I had to pick one time to be there, that would be it. And I don't care what your class schedule is like, you can find a week to get away for vacation, if you really want to. :)

I don't take classes in the summer because I have other obligations which require me to not be here during that time. If I could do a summer semester I don't think I would, I would rather be camping for weeks at a time not in Vancouver, or if I were here, I would be at the beach, just not studying. I like to have a break from studying.

Hows the heat on campus in the summer? Does it get really bad in some of the rooms?

No, but sometimes it's hell climbing all those stairs in that heat. Sweat city. =P

all i remember is it being much hotter outside than inside.

i'm actually excited to take classes this summer! the campus is absolutely gorgeous--i love lying on the grass and studying/catching some shut eye.

Only problem is that you may end up with sessional professors. Some are all right; others are clearly not qualified to teach.

It is funny, I notice that there are a few professors that are exclusively summer professors... Probably it is because most professors went off doing research in the summer after boring their rear end off dealing with us punks.

its just a shame that I can't take more than 2 courses without killing my summer :(

but on the other hand, I'll have time to bring the bike up there to ride the trails :)

Is this for real? I'm planning on taking summer courses so I can qualify for co-op next summer. Bummer.

You can end up with a sessional instructor anytime. Check the class ahead of time and do your research IF your objective is to avoid a sessional instructor.

Faculty generally are teaching for 2 semesters and then disappear afterwards. Some do it fall and spring, some do it spring and summer, some do it summer and spring.

Summer semester is no different than the other ones in my opinion. Its very nice up on campus during the summer....a bit hot in some classes, but it depends on which classroom you are in.

    I'm looking forward to it.

MMmm guys? What's the big difference between intersession and non-intercession classes? I mean, besides the time length difference.

I'm going to taking managerial econ in the summer :(
  • edited February 2008
^its just the length difference, as you said. They're like "fast-track" courses....you breeze through everything super quick in a short amount of time....but, you get it done faster, so thats a plus.

Does it get too confusing cuz it's so fast? I guess it's more hardcore right?

depends on the person id say, but its more intensive naturally due to time constraints

I'll be around living in res this summer. I took a class up here last summer and it was gorgeous.

Anyone else here living in res during the summer?

Newbie question, what does sessional mean?
  • edited April 2008
un-tenured staff teaching rather than tenured professors?

could you be a little more clear...

sessional instructors are people with or maybe without grad degrees whoa re deemed qualified to teach a class

usually its someone with a grad degree, who is new to the university and hasnt been offered tenure

sessional means its a sessional instructor, as opposed to one with a secure posistion with the university

    sessionals will have less experience
