Video lag/stutter when watching youtube videos in Chrome

edited September 2013 in General
Hi all,

I recently bought a new HP laptop (with Windows 8) and when I watch youtube videos in Chrome, I get video lag every few seconds which is annoying. This does not happen when I use Firefox. I had the same issue with my previous HP laptop (with Windows XP) at one point but it was fixed (I don't remember what I did). Of course, I googled this issue and did what people suggested: disabled Chrome's Flash plugin, so the only one left is from Adobe. I also searched for driver updates but there were none. I also have the same problem when I watch downloaded videos.

My 7 year old laptop was better at playing video files online and offline than the new one and this makes me sad.

Does anyone know what else I can do?

Ummm it could be a GPU problem? Try watching a video and press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and monitor your resource usage. If stuff is running at 100% then that would be the cause. If not then it is probably a plug-in then or the video codec. Going on a whim here.
  • I don't have CD-ROM, should I try sticking it somewhere else, would USB port work? Also, does the size matter in this case?

I restarted the laptop and it seems to work so far, so I'll wait until it starts to lag again (which I am sure it will) and then see what resources are being used alot.
  • I would have guessed the flash plugin, but it sounds like you have already tried that.

What version of chrome are you running? I have found the dev builds to be a bit finicky lately. Assuming you are running the stable one though it shouldn't be a problem.

You could try the html5 version of youtube http://www.youtube.com/html5?gl=CA . Intuitively I feel like at the end of the day it will be flash related. If the html5 version is also choppy though it must be something else.
  • That would be quite sad if you could stick in the USB port but you could give it a try. Is it penis 2.0 though or 3.0? Because that really makes a difference.
  • Have a look at:
