Car Stuff

edited February 2009 in General
There isnt a car forum (unless im just completely blind and cant see it), so i'll post this in here.

Whenever it rains, i need to have the air conditioner on in my car or else my windshield will fog right up! Does anyone know why this is? Its really annoying, wastes fuel, and it gets really cold :(

Most cars are like that for some reason...but you gotta admit it gets rid of the fog really fast.

You could always turn on the heater. It fogs up because the temperature of the window is different from the internal heat. So you can fix it either by lowering the internal temperature to the level of the window, or by heating the window to the temperature of the inside. Turn on the heater, and direct the flow of air at the windshield.

i found that you don't need to make it AC in order to get rid of the condensation, just use cold air / window vent setting/ high, works fine for me.

The reason why the AC works for clearing the winshield in damp weather is because the AC has a condenser. If you are using the option of recirculating the air from inside the cabin (often called 'Max AC' on some cars rather then just 'AC') it takes the moisture from inside the cabin curculates it through the AC system where it is then removed by the condenser. Then the 'dry' air is pumped back into the cabin, hence drying the windows. This is why you may or may not notices (depending how observant you are) you car dripping water when you park it after running the AC. The condensors drain themselfs.

Cold air only does nothing, it needs the AC to be on in order for the windows to stop fogging. If i put hot air on it, it makes it worse.

Its so annoying, not so much now because its not raining, but when Fall comes around, it will just be awful driving to and from school with the bloody AC on. Grrr.

Clean the inside of your windsheild with "anti-fog" Windex if its that much of a problem. It's made to prevent bathroom windows from fogging up when you shower, but it works in the car too

screwwwwwwwww you , i know what i'm talking about.

No AC? Try cracking the windows and crank the heat. That way the humidity has somewhere to go (out the window). Trust me... I am a Geographer!

    ^of course i have AC

I just dont like putting it on when its raining cuz it gets too cold.

I'll try the anti-fog window stuff.

You can have the AC on, but with high heat to get rid of the fog (so you won't get cold). The windows will fog more easily if they are dusty on the inside. Also you can have an open box of baking soda (or baking powder..can't remember which one) in a ziplock bag, and when you leave your car, just open the ziplock and put the box on your dash (it will absorb moisture).

Best... end of a sentence... ever

AC's a helluva waste of gas, though. I just used to crank the heat on full and let the car warm up, then drive.

Actually if you need to defrost your front window in a hurry, take a cup of COLD water (not hot!) and pour it over your windshield. Water at 10 degrees C is still warm enough to melt the ice. Then use your windshield wipers, and you're good to go. :)

A/C on reduces condensation in the cabin, keep it always on and set the right temperature. A/C doesn't mean COLD air only.

    gas wasting though no?

I wouldn't call it wasting... I'd say using. But don't worry, it is only up to 10% more than you usually use. If you care so much for gas - don't drive at all. Use the bus, bike, walk or carpool.
