What am i going to do?

edited August 2007 in General
Next week, my replacement for my job starts (cuz im going back to school so they need to find someone else who can work full-time).

She starts next Monday.

I dont leave this job until next Friday.

Thats five days i have to sit with this woman (who is much much MUCH older than me) and train her to do this job.

I learned this job within a day.

And the worst part is, i wont be able to go on the internet at all with her sitting next to me....i spend about 3/4 of my day on the internet.

Its gonna be a dark, dark week. :(

just train her to use the internet all week

but seriously though, why does it take 5 days to train her if it only took you 1 to learn? Even if you're a super genius and shes slightly mentally challenged, does it really take 4 extra days to learn?

Talk to her and get some of her life experiences. You just have to turn a negative situation into a positive one...I'm sure theres something you can learn from her too

Yah, I guess i could talk to her....

It will not take her 5 days to learn. I told my manager that and he agreed with me....but yet shes still coming in for the full week.

I want to bring it up again to him, but i dont really know how and i guess im just stuck with it. Theres gonna be a lot of sitting around. We're both gonna be really bored, i can already see it. I mean, we dont get a lot of phone calls here and there is like nothing to do....its a pretty slack job, i must say. Ugh.

Like seriously, my whole morning has been spent on the internet. And its not like im not doing any work, there just isnt any to do!!

Bossing people around is fun! Get her doing some of the work and go to starbucks yourself thats what the supervisors at my work always do

    Where do you work anyways
  • edited August 2007
    I work in an office.

Yah, i should do that. Just go and run errands, lol.

    Whip it out.

Wait wait, what matter does this concern?

But yeah, get comfortable with her and if there's no awkwardness, I doubt she'd give much of a damn if you were doing whatever the hell you normally do. Besides, she's under your supervision, so she'll most likely be trying not to do something stupid, whereas she'll take what you're doing as routine. No biggie. But if she pipes up and asks why you're on the net so much, punch her in the head. That'll put her in her place.

How old is much much older? Older people can be pretty nice, just talk to them. Hopefully you don't get a bitter, stuck up bitch, but you are only there for a week anyways.

I dont know her exact age, but i would say shes between 50-55 years old. Thats a good 30 years on me.

She was a little stuck up. She came in today to meet with the property manager and her tone was kinda mean to me even tho i was pretty nice to her.

Thats fine, i can be bitchy too if she wants to play that game. :)

Im just gonna leave all the filing for her to do next week and then i can sit on the computer and surf the internet, hehe.

hahahah... I like that, make her do all the work while you slack off...
But seriously, maybe she just feels imtimidated because you are 30 years younger, and here she is, 50 years old & doing the same job a 20 year old is doing. Thats not your problem & does not give her a reason to act like a bitch, but perhaps you should try to be sensitive to that. Ask her if she has kids. Maybe she has kids around your age, so you can talk about that.

Maybe she just needs to warm up a bit....

so lemme get this straight; all this time u've been loafing (u said 3/4 of the day) and now u r complaining about doing work that u should have been doing the whole time? if anything teh 1 week is just karma thats all. put up with it cuz u were slaking this whole time. u make it sound so bad like u r a victim or sumthin; jsut deal wit it and have some respekt for ur elders while u r at it. life is not about slaking on the job and surfing the net when working. u hve become so used to doing what u do that acting like a sponge hs become 2nd nature to u. grow up and act responsibly!

I can't think of a better way to introduce yourself to a website than to make your first post dedicated to bashing somebody. Kudos on the replacing the letter "c" with a "k" in the word "respect", that takes a certain level of class and sophistication.

    WELCOME TO TALKSFU!

I'm thinkin the same thing. Just do what you usually do; if she sticks her head out, just tell her politely to mind her own business. By the time she picks up surfing the net as routine (which she might), you'll be long gone, so don't even worry. The bosses won't figure out probably until you're having midterms in October.

Bastard, I have a new level of respect for you: that is quite seriously the best advice ever. I mean, why bother explaining something to someone when the almighty strike to the chin transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. Her age may actually be on your side, for she will be more fragile and hence, infinitely more submissive. Just give it a try, even a nudge will let her know that if she gets out of line, you'll be there to lay down the law. You heard it on this thread first!

LOL! Nice first post. Actually, my job is a very slack one. There is not a lot of work to do in the first place. I usually get all of my tasks done in the morning and have nothing else to do for the rest of the day.

So what would you suggest i do? Sit around a twiddle my thumbs all day?

    ps LOL @ karma

    !!

Anyways, i'll prolly just talk to her a bit and get to know her. But honestly, im just gonna have to stretch everything out cuz i could prolly show her it all in less than a day.

Im gonna let the filing pile up so that i have something to do next week when shes here. Maybe i'll re-label a bunch of files too. I do hope shes nice tho, which im sure she is. I know it can be nerve-wracking coming into a new work place.

I kinda wish there was more to do here. Like seriously, i usually have work to do in the morning, and this morning the only thing ive done is answer phones and send out a courier, lol. Damn me for being so productive and getting things done right away! lolol.

    UPDATE!

The week went by and she was actually super nice....yes yes i know, i shouldnt judge people before i talk to them and get to know them, blah blah blah.

But yah, it was actually really fun. She was A LOT older than me, but we just sat and talked the whole time pretty much about random things.

It was actually really fun and im kinda gonna miss her....weird eh?

Anyways, no more job for me! :D
