PHIL xx1 is ALL ABOUT CONCEPTS! i failed AND got below class average on the first midterm :( but i think i did well on the final cuz i ended up with a B-! i had jillian mcintosh though. i believe peter horban is teaching it this semester goooooooooood luck with it! try to get his old midterms - i think it'd help
That goes for any Philosophy class (in my opinion).
Well, SFU Philosophy do have a reputation to be a GPA killer. I actually once talked to someone in UBC and they too have heard of this...
It fucks with your mind. And when you think you're right, you're far from it. It's a stupid subject; I barely passed and it was the lowest grade I have ever gotten so far (C-).
You took it? Sorry we couldn't get you out of it in time...
I could be wrong though! You may be good at it. Maybe you'll have an excellent TA or something. Eh. Good luck.
I have read a lot of things about that course and not one of them have anything good to say about it. Besides, I don't think you will learn anything useful from that course anyway...
ah! np` the list of courses and prof is usually posted around the time of registration (ling department is above Images Theatre) enjoy the first semester! :) you'll meet a lot of people! (at least.. more than you think:P)
Jeeze, I hope so! I don't think I'm good at meeting new people... =T And I'm taking ONE class in Surrey, I'm going to be COMPLETELY alone there!

great way to meet people: TUTORIALS! especially if they make you work in groups or partners! I personally like Burnaby better (even though Surrey is closer, has cheaper food, AND air conditioning!) because there are more people.
I was iffy about taking that class but it's so small and chances are I won't get in again until 4th year or something and I don't want to wait! sooo yeah =T
seriously?? why? what's so bad about the course.. because i'm enrolled in it.
I'll have to second that about phil xx1. Two other friends I got a C- in it. Totally ruined my GPA. I wish someone had warned old freshman me before I enrolled in it haha.

hmmmm.. depends on what program you're in and how many people wanna take the courses.. you can wait and check go.sfu.ca to see if people drop the courses. that tends to happen a lot. or else, make some friends that are older (or REALLY smart people that get scholarship) and maybe they'll save you spots :)

btw i see your posts on MallVibes :) GPA-Boosters sound like a good topic ;) (even though smart people usually say "There is no such thing as GPA boosters, it's either you try or you don't try." :P)

heh i dont think group projects are a good way to meet people, most of the time in group projects you end up with people you dont like, or people who are lazy. id say the 10 minutes before a tutorial starts, or the 10 minutes after are normally the best time
pure lectures are definitely a way to never meet people. like all those psyc classes who cut their tutorials
seminars on the other hand are decent as well, but id say mainly the 10 minutes before and the 10 minutes after
Now I'm shit scared, but I think I will ride this one philo course out and hope for the best.
Looking back on first year I can't remember why that class was so hard, I got a B, but most of the time i thought i was going to fail because I hadnt a clue what was going on or being said.
