File Sharing Programs

edited February 2009 in General
Can anyone tell me any good programs, specifically, ones that also have a version for Macs? Limewire has infested with fake songs...and my soulseek stopped working.

you can try torrent clients/websites like transmisson/mininova

if your looking for something like limewire but without as much junk try frostwire. its for mac, opensource and i've had no issues with it since i started using it 2 years ago.

I just use the good old filesharing program BitTorrent and Demonoid for all my music, movies, and comic need. Other than failing to download COD4, BitTorrent has never failed me.

Demonoid and Pirate Bay are the two sites I frequent. I tend to use Demonoid more often because they are very good at uploading new stuff very quickly. For example, they uploaded pretty much every episode of The Clone Wars the day it was aired.

Would you like an access code?

i like to just type in "file name" then "torrents" into google and skim the results.

yeah you can download single songs off albums but generally what you do is look for the album and than select just the one file to download.

type your song name in google and put "rapidshare" on the end

this frostwire problem is good, same GUI as limewire

you cant just google everything jaydub, a lot of those torrent sites are just full of ads and you get back good results, if search engines had user comments after each listings though, then you could...

to get a good answer its easier to just ask people

I prefer utorrent, it's simpler and has less unnecessary crap unlike bittorrent.

That's the way to do it. I recommend isohunt.com, most torrent sites are catching up with comments beside the torrents, but the search engine query on some of them are just awful.

if you use torrentz.com it'll search all the other torrent engines for you

http://coda.fm/ is the place to go. perfect quality. fast downloads. you get the album art and all that. and you get full albums too. professional looking site. website layout makes it easy to search the artist you want. focuses on their huge collection of albums rather than the 'peers/seeds' and all that jargon. so yea.

edit: i don't even use limewire anymore after discovering this. and i only download off of itunes whenever i like something that's itunes exclusive

These are all very good ideas, I will check them out. I think I need to upgrade my iPod from 8gb to a 16 gb model though.

I use utorrent on windows, azureus on mac
usually everything i need is on mininova.org, i prefer it over piratebay
but if you want to search every torrent website, i think hiking meant torrents.to

good'ol file sharing...for movies and stuff I use torrents (isohunt or piratebay depending on what im looking for)...i use utorrent and i'm pretty sure it's available for mac now as well

for singles, i usually start with a google search: "artist track rapidshare" if i don't find it, then i swap rapidshare for other file sharing networks like mediafire or zshare. if I STILL can't find it then i do a search on Ares which is similiar to limewire but way better

worst come to worst you can always rip the song straight from the youtube video

For songs I use Limewire PRO. It's actually pretty good so long as you learn ways to get around accidentally downloading fake songs w/ viruses and the like (for example, if you're looking for a song, only use some words, or only the name of the artist etc.).. plus it's usually pretty fast for me (~80-100% my full download speed).

For movies/programs, I primarily search for torrents on isohunt because there aren't any porn/dating ads and the comments feature. Sometimes I use piratebay (though I think it shares most of the same trackers as isohunt, and it's got dating ads on the sides) or torrentreactor. I use Azureus (v2.5 because Vuze sucks balls) as my torrent client, although I know uTorrent's supposedly pretty good too (clean, fast load time). BitTorrent blows.

btw form ppls discussions about torrents it dosnt seem like some of u realize u can DL a single file from a torrent
for example a torrent can be an entire CD with 12 songs but u can chose to download only 1...* of those songs from that specific torrent using a decent bit torrent client

that said uTorrent has a ton of features but i would advise ppl against using it
it connects to far too many nodes for its own good and will bring ur internet to a halt even if ur downloading and uploading @ a pathetic speed... now u can restrict it but, if ur asking about this kinda shit i doubt ud figure out how :p

bitcomet seems to be the best for me when downloading torrents. But for singles, I used to go to the altavista audio search thing (they removed it recently!).

    Hiking has already mentioned this.

Hmm.. interesting.. haven't heard about nodes before. How many nodes is considered a lot? I just checked and my Azureus connects to about 125. I don't feel any slowdown if the torrent is going slow (~50KB/s), only when it gets near my max (~550KB/s). Would that still be considered a node issue?
  • edited February 2009
ok maybe node wasnt the best word choice ... "peers" is what i meant

for azureus (isnt it called vuze now?) i wouldnt know i haven't used it and regardless all torrents are gonna be affected by many factors:
torrent client, internet connetion speed, setting in the torren client, peers, location in the world etc.

i was just sayn that 'out of box' install of uTorrent isnt optimal and will bog down ur local network
  • edited February 2009
totally agree with you, utorrents default setting are horrible,
i just changed a bunch of settings like max download speed and numbers of peers connected and saw an instant boost to at least 200 kB/s
my average used to a lame 30 kB/s lol
  • edited February 2009
It'll only bog down your local network if your network has issues. A proper network won't have issues with it.
Personally I use private torrent sites for all of my filesharing needs. Usenet is another good place.

    -inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wma|mp3) “song or band name”

Replace "song or band name" above with a song or band name, and copy/paste into google. You can also replace "wma|mp3" with "pdf" to find books. There are also specialized rapidshare search engines which usually work better than searching google for rapidshare links.
