Begging professor to pass me in CMPT 120?

edited August 2013 in General
As the title suggests.....I did well overall in the course, got perfect in most of the assignments. But the problem is that in order to pass the course, you need to pass the final, which was today. And I'm not confident I will pass it.

I'm a fourth year student about to graduate at the end of the year but I need this first year course in order to do so (never finished my science quantitative requirements). I've already failed this course once before during first year and this semester, I attempted it again.

If I do fail the final, it'll most likely be by a little, judging from how the final went. You think I can beg the professor to give me a way to makeup those lost percentages? Or maybe a way to force him into passing me? My life literally rides on this, if I can't pass this, my life might as well be over.

  • Like I always say, depends your gender and the prof's gender and how hot/seductive you are.
  • And what's up with your constant "life will be over" type stories and stuff lol.
  • This is actually rather serious for me, I NEED to pass this course or...well, let's just say not everything will be pleasant.

  • Well for one I think the rule is normally that students must attain an overall passing grade on the weighted average of exams in the course in order to obtain a clear pass. So if you had a midterm too that you passed it could help you out.

Otherwise in my experience many profs seem to either not really know about this rule, or not care. I have seen many people get decent marks after failing the final. It is also possible that the grades might be scaled, in which case a pass will be lower than 50%.

In the end if you did fail simply because you fail the final (and your overall course percentage is above 50%) I would just talk to the prof. I wouldn't be surprised he would give you a D so you can finish.
  • Which is exactly my advice...
  • Not really, you essentially suggested he would need to have cleavage to get his grade upgraded.
  • Ryan is right, plus it will more than likely be scaled, im sure you'll be fine.
  • I took it and it wasn't scaled.
  • So 95 for A+, 90 for A etc?
  • That is what it was when I took it. I could see it being different though when it is a prof who doesn't teach 120 often, teaching it in the summer, and likely to a class made up predominantly of non computer science majors.
  • It was scaled when I took it, depends on the Prof and how well the class is doing.
  • @Ryan But bottomline is you said you need to talk to the prof. My advice applies and goes hand in hand.
  • hassan scales it. montaseer doesn't, so what you get in overall is the exact grade you'll get. :(
  • op did u pass the course?
  • Yeah I did. Thanks for all the help guys!
  • No, I'm going through a life crisis right now. I got 40% on the Final Exam and my professor is Muntaseer.

So my final grade is F. I need some advice.

On the breadth requirement page, it says something about double majors only needing one breadth course for science/quantitative. Anyone know if this is still in effect? Because I have a double major in English and Communications but my degree plan still says I need 6 credits.

Is there also anyway I could ask them to wave the requirements?
  • Talk to the advisor yo
  • Ah sorry man, this is not much help but don't stress things will always get better as long as you don't give up! As corny as that sounds...
  • I cannot find any reference to the joint English/Communications major on either of the communications or english sites so I can't say for sure. Reading on the page that  talks about breadth requirements though It seems to suggest that you can use one set of breadth courses ( 6 B-sci/soc/hum, and the required W/Q) to satisfy the breadth requirements for both degrees. I know there are programs where you only need one B-sci course (many science programs for example) so it could be the case.

On the topic of waiving things as people have said you would need to talk to an advisor. You might be able to get breadth things waived, though I kind of doubt it. I dont think it is possible to get credit requirements waived though, they are pretty fundamental to "degree completion".

Talk to n advisor and see what they can do. Absolute worst case scenario you will have to do another semester, which in reality is not the end of the world.
