Be warned. The walls of McCow are like tissue paper. You breathe and the person in the room next to you can hear you.

Every residence has its own strengths and weaknesses. Shell has awesome kitchens and close proxmity to campus but the bathrooms are kinda old and dingy (you have to share the facilities by the way). McCow is just old and worn down so I wouldn't recommend living there. The new buildings are cool, but I heard it feels like living in a jail cell. It's definitely worth it to live on rez (financially) but it takes some getting used to. It's not like living at home and definitely unlike living on your own. As an alternative, if you can afford it, check out the townhouses at univercity. If you're lucky, you can find a place with a low rent, that way you get your own kitchen and bathroom or you could hook up with a friend and get a bigger place and split the rent. good luck!

I lived in rez last year in the towers and I liked it. This year I am living in the Townhouses on rez but I am not sure if I will stay another year.

Definitely I am going to stay another year, rez is the shit.

Stayed in Rez for two years and I had a blast in both years. One of the BEST THING about living in Rez is that it is A LOT more convenient to go to class because of the proximity to campus and you don't have to worry about snowstorms or blizzards.

I live in Tower D in my first year and I had some fun when I was there. The facility is superb because the towers are only three years old. The one bad thing about towers are that you have to buy a meal plan because you don't get a kitchen.

During my second year, I lived in Shell House. The best thing about Shell House, as well as McCow is that you get to cook. However, the washroom is not that good because Shell House, if I am not mistaken, as old as SFU itself.

One of the unfortunate things about my Rez experience is that I still felt left out and that there are less cool things to do than I expected. While I am not staying up on campus in Fall 2008, I MAY return in Spring 2009.

I know everyone has an opinion on this one. Mine is this:
If you decide to come to rez and if you want to make friends, then stay FOR at least 2 semesters!!

If you want to make friends, etc., then you have to be patient here. If the first semester doesn't go well, then stay for the second one, and eventually, you'll make friends, etc!

As well there are many events on rez and they are there for a reason, to help build social bonds between people. Events are put on all the time, go to them. If you got an idea for an event tell a CA and they will be more than happy to put it on. As well keep your door open and talk to people on your floor.

ive been looking at the rez info on sfu's site, and it looks pretty lame
do they really make you live by the contract you sign, cuz that would be pretty horrible....only 2 parties at the same time? no kegs?
i wanna move out for spring semester but reading that contract made rezlife seem boring..
o ya..are they allowed to search your rooms for banned items lol

I can see this as being a very awkward problem.
    Very.

I currently live in McCow (yes, I move back into rez after finding out there are a few extra rooms), and the wall aren't that thin. I mean, I rarely hear my next door neighbor's conversation...

What worries me is that they may hear my (insert any nasty *hit here).

I think I saw you today on rez but I thought you had moved to Richmond so I wasn't sure if it was you.

i'm planning to move into Shell in the coming semester because of the kitchen and it is so close to WMC. anything i have to be aware of?
  • edited October 2008
Yeah, if you just sit in your room all the time and don' participate in any rez events then of course you will be bored.

If it is a tall Asian guy with short hair, dark clothes, and carrying a laptop bag, then it is probably me.

    Sorry I didn't see you.

Well, I was exaggerating for comedic effect, but I can quite honestly tell you that people can in fact hear through the walls in McCow, from personal experience.

Whoever built the place ought to be shot.

Maybe it is just my floor, but one of the interesting thing about McCow is that it got a shi* load of bathrooms. For example, my side of the floor has two bathrooms, one handicap bathroom, and one shower room.

    Hi?

There is only one residence at SFU. So you should live in that one.

Yeah, more TalkSFU members in Residence will rock so much!

I think they are allowed. I mean, they have keys to all our room anything in case of repair and what-not. However, I don't think your room will be searched unless you have be caught doing something terribly wrong. I mean, if you are going to bring anything questionable, it is best to consult your CA and the RHA, then the Residence Housing.

For example, if Rez will hold another paintball trip and I want to bring my own gears, I better inform anybody I can think of because I don't want the Burnaby ERT on my door.

Shell is a great building. McCow is ok, but they should definitely upgrade the kitchen a bit. First, there is insufficient shelves for everyone on the floor, second, the kitchen is somewhat inferior to Shell's. I feel like I am in the fuc*ing 70s in my kitchen in McCow.

You don't get to pick which specifically building you want to live in. You only get to choose between towers, dorms with kitchen, or townhouses.

If you can find one that is cheaper than Rez, then go for it. At least you don't have to do kitchen duty and attend floor meetings if you live outside of rez. However, to me, doing kitchen duty and attending floor meeting is a part of the fun...
